Мета та завдання навчального курсу

Мета:

формувати у студентів комунікативну, лінгвістичну і соціокультурну компетенції;
формувати у студентів когнітивну компетенцію у взаємозв’язку з іншими видами компетенцій;
формувати у студентів позитивне ставлення до оволодіння як мовою, так і культурою англомовного світу;
розвивати у студентів здатність до самооцінки і самовдосконалення, що є передумовою їх професійного росту;
формувати у студентів професійну компетенцію шляхом ознайомлення їх з різними методами і прийомами навчання англійської мови та залучення до виконання професійно орієнтованих завдань

Завдання:

подальший розвиток чотирьох головних умінь слухання , читання, говоріння та письма, та звернення особливої уваги на формування навички письма для академічних цілей Level 2
подальший розвиток соціокультурної компетенції студентів шляхом вивчення звичок і традицій народів англомовних країн, що формуватиме позитивне ставлення до них;
поглиблення лінгвокраїнознавчих знань студентів у межах тем, що визначені курсом навчання.

У результаті вивчення навчального курсу студент повинен

знати:

діапазон словника розмовних тем, які вивчаються під час курсу;
формули мовленнєвого етикету;
структуру різних типів писемного тексту: особистісного та академічного есе (character sketch, story evaluation), реферування (summary);
стильові домінанти тектів різних жанрів;

вміти:

висловлюватися вільно і спонтанно не відчуваючи браку мовних засобів для вираження думки;
висловлюватися з необхідним ступенем деталізованості й тематичної складності, демонструючи вільне володіння прийомами структурної побудови тексту;
ефективно і гнучко використовувати іноземну мову в різноманітних ситуаціях соціального, навчально-академічного та професійного спілкування;
навчити студентів розуміти нормативну англійську мову, в т.ч. її ідіоматичні складники в усному спілкуванні та в аудіозаписі в межах даної теми;
розуміти різноманітні складні тексти великого обсягу із різними риторичними прийомами аргументації і розкривати імпліцитну інформацію, що міститься у них; визначати стильові домінанти текстів різних жанрів (художній прозовий);
чітко і зв’язно висловлювати свої думки в різних типах писемного тексту;
продемонструвати оволодіння соціокультурними знаннями та уміннями із запропонованої теми та вміти використовувати цю інформацію у спілкуванні та професійній діяльності.

Навчальні теми змістового модуля 1.

Тема 1. Основні політичні партії та виборча система в США: особливості передвиборчої кампанії, агітація виборців, передвиборчі дебати.

Тема 2. Конституція та уряд США: принципи управління державою, Білль про права людини, представники гілок влади та їхні повноваження.

Тема 3. Основні політичні партії та виборча система Великобританії: основні партії та їхній політичний курс, виборча система країни, процедура загальних виборів.

Тема 4. Конституція та уряд Великобританії: функції Парламенту, кабінету міністрів.

Тема 5. Політична система в Україні: принципи управління державою, основні партії та їхній політичний курс, виборча система країни, процедура загальних виборів.

Змістовий модуль 2

Людина й закон

Навчальні теми змістового модуля 2.

Тема 1.Процедура судового процесу в США, Великобританії, Україні: учасники судового процесу.

Тема 2. Проблема прийняття правильного рішення при винесенні вироку підсудному.

Тема 3. Справедливість і закон: право на справедливе ставлення в суді, основні права підсудного в суді.

Тема 4. Проблема вибору адекватного покарання за злочин: смертний вирок та інші кардинальні міри покарання.

Тема 5. Законодавча система в США й Великобританії: система судів та їхні повноваження.

Тема 6. Проблема жорстокості в суспільстві, яка призводить до зростання злочинів: основні причини зростання злочинності в сучасному суспільстві.

Тема 7. Чи можливо попередити й уникнути злочин: заходи попередження злочинів (особливо для молоді).

Система вищої освіти в Україні / країнах, мова яких вивчається

Навчальні теми змістового модуля 3.

Тема 1. Специфіка іспитів у вищих школах України / країнах, мова яких вивчається: специфіка проведення іспитів, види тестів, система оцінювання екзаменаційних робіт.

Тема 2. Система вищої освіти США: рівні вищої освіти, види вищих навчальних закладів, специфіка навчання в цих закладах освіти, специфіка отримання ступенів бакалавра, магістра, навчальні предмети.

Тема 3. Специфіка вступу до вищого навчального закладу в Україні / країнах, мова яких вивчається: види навчальних закладів, система вступних іспитів, пакет документів, наукові ступені, академічна програма.

Тема 4. Про особливості студентського життя в Україні / країнах, мова яких вивчається. Життя в гуртожитку. Як студенти проводять вільний час.

Тема 5. Система вищої освіти Великобританії: вступні іспити, пакет документів, плата за навчання,наукові ступені, шкала оцінювання, академічна програма.

Тема 6. Відомі заклади вищої освіти: історія виникнення видатних академічних закладів України / країн, мова яких вивчається, їх академічні стандарти.

Життя в добу високих технологій

Навчальні теми змістового модуля 4.

Тема 1. Роль комп’ютера в житті людини: складові комп’ютера, робота з комп’ютером, проблема „хакерства”.

Тема 2. Переваги й недоліки інформаційного віку: Проблема перенасичення інформацією.

Тема 3. Гроші: Особисті й державні фінанси в сучасному суспільстві.

Тема 4. Національна валюта країн, мова яких вивчається: походження валютної одиниці країни, мова якої вивчається.

Тема 5. Система банків. Основні банківські операції: повноваження центрального банку, комерційних банків, види банківських послуг, податки.

Тема 6. Відкриття й закриття банківських рахунків: види банківських рахунків, можливості користування банківськими рахунками в США та Великобританії.

Тема 7. Переваги й недоліки під час користування чековими книжками: правила заповнювання чеків, дорожні чеки, чеки, які не сплачуються, анулювання чеків.

Тема 8. Банківські кредити: види кредитів (приватним і юридичним особам), сплачення кредитів, процентні ставки, кредитні спілки.

Тема 9. Правила користування кредитними картками. Алгоритм користування банкоматом: види кредитних карток, правила користування банкоматом.

Practical Class 1

1.Do ex. 2 p.53: fill in the blanks with the cultural terms (based on the commentary p. 54)
2.Practise pronunciation skills: do ex. 1, p. 65 (a mini lesson)
3.Read and translate the word combinations (p. 54)
4.Do ex. 3, p. 65 (discuss the spot points of the text)
5.Read and translate the first part of the text “From the Gospels” (p. 51 – 52).
6.Present the first item from the voc. notes – slack.

Task for self-control: 1.Learn the word combinations (p. 54) by heart for back translation and spelling dictation. 2.Do ex. 1, p. 59.3.Read and translate the second part of Text 2 (p. 52 – 53). Write out all unknown words, pronounce them correctly. 4.Prepare for the spelling dictation based on the first part of Text 2. 5.Voc. notes (item 2 – run as a verb – 10 meanings) – learn by heart, translate the sentences in writing, be ready to present back translation of the sentences.

Practical class 2

1.Work in pairs: Practise back translation of the word combinations (p.54).
2.Check up ex. 1, p. 65.
3.Fill in the blanks in the tables to practise spelling skills (see handouts)
4.Practise spelling dictation of the first part of the text:
inheritance, thumb, .forefinger, contemplation, submerge, leap, caught, doubling, mighty busy, float, democracy, species, convincing, a human electorate, scheme, fireflies, swarm, illuminate ,governor’s mansion, insistent, Campaign Advisor.
5.Read and translate the second part of text 2.
6.Present the second item from the voc. notes – run. Practise back translation of the sentences.

Task for self-control: 1.Prepare the first part of the text for emphatic reading and retelling (make use of ex. 7, p. 66) 2.Prepare the second part of the text for spelling dictation. 3.Prepare ex. 1, p. 59 for back translation. 4.Do ex. 2 p. 59. 5.Voc. notes (item 2 – run as a noun and word combinations) – learn by heart, translate the sentences in writing, be ready to present back translation of the sentences.

Practical class 3

1. Practise back translation of ex. 1, p. 59.

4. Write the training translation based on the words from voc. notes (1 – 3).

Task for self-control: 1.Do ex. 6, 7, p. 61. 2.Voc. notes (item 5 – elect) – learn by heart, translate the sentences in writing, be ready to present back translation of the sentences. 3.Do ex. 8, p. 66 (acting out a conversation. Make it crammed with active vocabulary). 4.Write a Plot Summary of the text (follow the instructions given in ex. 9, p. 66). Organize a discussion in class (a mini lesson)

Practical Class 6

1. Check up ex. 6, 7, p. 61. 2. Present the 5th item from the voc. notes – elect.
2. Work in pairs: Do ex. 11 (b), p. 63.
3. Act out the dialogues: ex. 8, p. 66.

Task for Self-control: 1.Voc. notes (item 6 – baffle) – learn by heart, translate the sentences in writing, be ready to present back translation of the sentences. 2.Prepare ex.6,7, p.61 – 62 , ex. 11 (b), p. 63 for back translation. 3.Do ex. 13, 14, p. 63 – 64. 4.Write a character sketch (make use of the instructions given in ex.10,p. 66).

Practical Class 7-8

1. Check up back translation of ex. 6, 7, p. 61 – 62 , ex. 11 (b), p. 63.
2. Check up ex. 13, 14, p. 63 – 64.
3. Discuss the students’ character sketches in class.
4. Collect the students’ essays (story evaluation).
5. Write a training translation based on all active vocabulary.

Task for Self-control: 1.Review word combinations, voc. notes for a training translation. 2.Write a story evaluation (make use of ex. 11, p. 66). 3.Analyze Text 2 “From the Gospels…” (ex. 12, p. 66). 4.Read and translate Topical Vocabulary (1, 2) p.62. 5. Read and transalte Text 1, p. 72 – 73 “Major Parties and Elections in the US”(an oral presentation based on the outline.

Practical Class 9-11

1. Topical vocabulary: read and translate items 1, 2 from the topical vocabulary p.67. Check up ex. 1, 2, p. 69 – 70, ex. 10, p. 75 – 76.
2. A mini lesson based on ex. 7a, b, p. 72 and Text 1 “Major Parties and Elections in the US”. (The text might be read and translated first. The students are to be ready to speak on the US major parties, voting procedures and the procedure of president election in detail). It might be preceded by the following lexical exercise: Find the Еnglish equivalents in the text “Major Parties and Elections in the US”.
3. Presentation of the topics: “Major Parties and Elections in the US”. While grading the answer ask the students to use PRESENTATION GRADING SHEET.

Task for self-control: 1.Learn the Topical vocabulary (items 1, 2) p. 67 by heart (including ex. 1, 2, p. 69 – 70, ex. 10, p. 75 - 76) – orally. 2.Arrange a mini lesson on ex. 3, p. 70, ex. 4, p. 70 - 71. 3.Read and translate the Dialogue “Running for president in the US” (ex. 8, p. 74). Prepare it for back translation. Appoint a person to organize a mini lesson (any interesting tasks, dialogues on the analogy, pole-playing, etc.) 4.Read and translate the Text “Six Point Plan” (p. 75).

Practical Class 12-14

1. Pair work: practise back translation of the topical vocabulary (including ex. 1, 2, p. 69 – 70, ex. 10, p. 75 - 76).
2. Do ex. 3, 4, p. 70.
3. Class discussion: practise back translation and discuss the issues form the Dialogue in ex. 8, p. 74 (a mini lesson).
4. A mini lesson based on the Text “Six Point Plan” (p. 75)
5. A mini lesson based on Text 2 “The United States Constitution and Government” p. 76. The students are to share additional information.

Task for self-control: 1.Prepare the words from the Topical vocabulary (1, 2) for spelling dictation. 2.Learn the topical vocabulary on the topic “The State System of the USA” from: ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLMASTER – p. 120. 3.Read and translate the text (p. 120 – 121). Appoint a person to organize a mini lesson (discuss the questions given in ex.2, p. 121 and make up your own questions on the topic). 4.Topic presentation: Speak on the topic “The State System of the USA”.

Practical Class 14

1. Write a test on the words from the Topical vocabulary.
2. Pair work: practise back translation of the topical vocabulary (p. 120).
3. Group discussion: discuss the issues from the text “The State System of the USA” (a mini lesson).
4. Presentation of the students’ topics. While grading the answer ask the students to use PRESENTATION GRADING SHEET.

Task for self-control: 1.ENGLISH SKILLMASTER ADVANCED: Read and translate the Topical vocabulary (issues 3, 4) p. 67 –68. 2. Do ex 6, p.71. 3.Do ex. 12, 13 p. 76 – 77. 4.Read and translate Text 3 “Major Parties and Elections in the UK” (p. 78 – 80), do ex. 14 a, b, p. 77.

Practical Class 15

1. Check up the Ukrainian equivalents to the English terms from the Topical Vocabulary (p. 67 – 68, items 3, 4).
2. Check up ex. 6, p. 71.
3. Check up ex. 12 – 13, p. 76 – 77.
4. Do the lexical exercise based on Text 3 “Major Parties and Elections in the UK".

Task for self-control: 1.Learn the words from the topical vocabulary (p. 67 – 68, items 3, 4) and from ex. 12, 13 p. 76 – 77 by heart (orally). 2.Read and translate Text 4 “The UK Constitution and Government” (p. 80 – 81) (appoint a person to organize a discussion. The student is responsible for lexical exercises). Be ready to speak in detail on the issues from the text. 3.Read and translate “Cameron Victory Speech” (ex. 17, p. 81 – 82). Appoint a person to organize a mini lesson.

Practical Class 16

1. Pair work: practise back translation of the words from the topical vocabulary (p. 24, items 3, 4) and from ex. 12, 13 p. 32 – 33. Then ask smb. to present it in front of the class.
2. A Mini Lesson based on the issues form Text 4 “The UK Constitution and Government” (p. 35 – 36).
3. A Mini Lesson based on the issues from “Cameron Victory Speech” (ex. 17, p. 36 – 38).

Task for self-control: 1.Prepare the words from the topical vocabulary (p. 67 – 68, items 3, 4) and from ex. 12, 13, p. 76 – 77 for a spelling dictation. 2.Learn the topical vocabulary on the topic “The State System of the UK” from: ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLMASTER – p. 123. 3.Read and translate the text (p. 124 – 126).
